About Me

James Markham is a UK-based theatre director with a focus on musical theatre, new writing, and reimagined classics.

His work includes Assistant Directing on the 40th anniversary Les Misérables at the Liverpool Empire — one of only 11 non-replica productions authorised by Cameron Mackintosh — as well as The Wolves and She Kills Monsters at LIPA with Gitika Buttoo, and Je Suis Charlie with Scott Le Crass. Internationally, James directed a showcase at the 3,240-seat Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou, China.

James trained as an actor at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and in Musical Theatre at the Royal Academy of Music.

His work focuses on uncovering depth and authenticity in text and music, with a particular interest in musical theatre that challenges traditional forms and amplifies stories about flawed characters, community, and identity.

James is queer, neurodiverse, and working-class — experiences that continue to shape how he approaches storytelling.
